Johnston City Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met March 20.

The Board of Education of the Johnston City Community Unit School District No. 1 met at a regular Board meeting held on March 20, 2025 with the Closed Session beginning at 5:33 p.m. Regular Session beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Unit Office, 1113 Grand Avenue, Johnston City, IL. President Chris Cullum called the meeting to order and asked the clerk for the attendance roll call.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chad Barras, Jimmy Dean, John Etherton, Randy McIntosh, Patti Martin, John Van, and Chris Cullum
Absent: None
Motion made by and seconded by to approve the consent agenda consisting of the following:
A. Approval of Closed Session and Regular Session Minutes of the 2/20/25 Regular Meeting
B. Approval of Treasurer’s Report
C. Approval of Bills for Payment
D. Approval of IHSA 2025-2026 Membership
Voting Aye: Barras, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum
Abstaining: Dean
Motion Carried.
Steve Sims, Architechniques Ltd., presented construction updates. The construction at Jefferson School is going well. The drawings for the Maintenance Grant Project have been started. The Jefferson School Office will be moved to a temporary location beginning May 22nd.
Motion made by Chad Barras and seconded by Jimmy Dean to award the bid for the Jefferson School Asbestos Abatement Project to General Waste Services, Inc. in the amount of $126,800 for the expedited schedule.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
The awarding of the bid for the Jefferson School HVAC Project was tabled. The awarding of the bid for the Washington Middle School Renovation Project was tabled.
Motion made by Jimmy Dean and seconded by Randy McIntosh to engage Cindy Bobell to conduct the FY25 Audit.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
Motion made by Randy McIntosh and seconded by John Van to set the summer school dates for Monday through Friday, June 2, 2025 through June 27, 20254, with no school on June 19, 2025 and June 20, 2025.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
Discussion was held regarding the Regional Office of Education #21 Detachment Hearing for the property located at 15411 Karigan Lane, Johnston City, IL 62951.
Motion made by Jimmy Dean and seconded by Chad Barras to accept the resignations of Hope Morgan as High School Bowling Coach, Will Carmickle as High School Assistant Volleyball Coach and High School Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach, Hannah Cutsinger as High School Dance Coach, Stacy Warren as Middle School Dance Coach, and Megan Hearn as In-School Suspension Supervisor.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
Motion made by Jimmy Dean and seconded by Chad Barras to employ Anna Clark, Madison Weber, and Lori Roach as 2nd Grade Teachers, Alexis Segers as a 4th Grade Teacher, Alex Zimmerman as a 5th-8th Grade Math Teacher, Sydney Billington and Megan Hearn as a Full Service Community Liaisons, and to approve the reciprocal transfer of McKinley Carver to a 4th Grade Teacher and Renee Fort to a Student Support Teacher at Lincoln School.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
Motion made by John Etherton and seconded by John Van to approve Brooke Henderson as a Volunteer Assistant Middle School Cheerleading Coach and Megan Hearn as a Volunteer Assistant Middle School Track Coach.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
Motion made by John Van and seconded by Randy McIntosh to post the following positions: Summer School Teachers, Summer School Paraprofessionals, Summer Drivers’ Education
In-School Suspension Supervisor, High School Assistant Volleyball Coach, High School Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach, High School Dance Coach, High School Bowling Coach, and Volunteer Middle School Dance Coach.
Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, McIntosh, Martin, Van, and Cullum Motion Carried.
Heather Miller provided a report on the Full Service Community Schools Program.
Mrs. Clark informed the Board that legislation was in committee again today, March 20th, to ban the use of Native American names, logos, and mascots in K-12 schools. It passed committee today, but is on hold. The Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA), Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), and the Illinois Principals Association (IPA) all oppose the legislation.
Mr. Pietrantoni has filed E-Rate.
Mrs. Clark updated the Board on activities and accomplishments in the District. ∙ State assessments have started.
∙ Members of the Educators Rising Program Research Team placed 2nd in the Team Research Competition.
∙ The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held and had 12 new inductees.
∙ Emma Holland received the John A. Logan College Ambassador Scholarship.
∙ High School students volunteered at the food pantry held at the Methodist Church.
∙ The High School Scholar Bowl Team competed at the IHSA State Competition. The team competed against three private schools.
∙ The 5Essential Survey is now available.
Motion made by John Van and seconded by Randy McIntosh to adjourn the meeting at 6:40p.m.
