Several Southern Illinois University athletic teams faced challenges due to the rainy conditions in Carbondale. However, competitions continued for the Salukis as they progressed in their respective Missouri Valley Conference events.
The track and field team dealt with the cancellation of the Bill Cornell Spring Classic but is preparing for the Gibson Invitational hosted by Indiana State from April 17-18.
The softball team maintained its successful season start, achieving a doubleheader sweep against Indiana State after weather-related scheduling changes. McKenzie Newcomb received the MVC Newcomer of the Week award for her outstanding performance the previous weekend against Belmont. "She picked up a win while compiling a 0.00 ERA," and this recognition marks her second time as Newcomer of the Week this season. Upcoming, the team has a midweek trip to Missouri and a weekend series against Bradley.
SIU baseball experienced a loss due to weather affecting their weekend series with Missouri State. However, they achieved a non-conference win against Lindenwood, largely thanks to Tyler Timmerman’s eight innings of shutout pitching. The team has a full schedule ahead, including hosting Southeast Missouri State and traveling to Indiana State.
Men's golf faced a cancellation at the Hoosier Collegiate but will head to the Hawkeye Invitational on April 13. The women’s golf team completed the Coach Mo Classic in Florida, placing 16th, and is finishing participation at the UMD Terp Invitational before proceeding to the MVC Tournament on April 13.
