Southern Illinois athletics experienced a busy week, with a full schedule that included track and field, softball, baseball, and men's golf.
The track and field team participated in the WashU Invitational and Distance Carnival in St. Louis, where Christian Coleman won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.72. Shane Ashton claimed victory in the 400-meter men's race, while Brianna Nieset and Britany Ziemer won the women's 1500-meter and 3000-meter steeple events, respectively. The team is now preparing to host the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on April 4 and 5.
In softball, the Salukis began the week with honors for Jackie Lis, named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, and Emily Williams, awarded MVC Newcomer of the Week. The team then traveled to Nashville, defeating Belmont in a three-game series. "We had a great series against Belmont," said team coach.
The Salukis look ahead to a home series against Indiana State, with three games from April 4 to 6.
Baseball had a successful week with a 5-0 record, including a conference series sweep of Bradley, and a standout performance with a 25-11 victory. The team begins their next set of games with a match against Lindenwood on April 1, followed by a series with Missouri State from April 4 to 6.
Swim and dive concluded their season, highlighted by Alex Santiago setting a new program and MVC record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 45.11. Eighteen athletes were named to the MVC's All-Scholar-Athlete teams, with Olivia Herron recognized as the Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Men's golf participated in the Duck Invitational in Oregon, placing tenth. Oliver Ulrich was the top performer for the team. Their next event is the Hoosier Collegiate on April 5 and 6. Women's golf has a busy schedule with the Coach Mo Classic in Florida, followed by the UMD Terp Invitational in Maryland, as they prepare for the MVC Tournament.
