Southern Illinois University has promoted Steve Hawkins to the role of Associate Head Coach for the men's basketball team. Head coach Scott Nagy announced the decision, emphasizing Hawkins' significant contributions and expertise. "Promoting Coach Hawkins was definitely the right decision for us," Nagy stated. "Like our players, I rely heavily on Coach Hawkins in all situations. His coaching experience and work ethic make this an obvious choice for us."
During his tenure with the team, Hawkins has managed defensive duties and showed notable improvements in the team's performance. After taking on the role of defensive coordinator, the team's defense improved substantially, moving from last to 82nd nationally in opponent field goal percentage at the rim. The improvement in paint defense was even more significant, rising from 364th to 20th.
In his comments, Hawkins expressed gratitude to both Coach Nagy and Athletic Director Tim Leonard. "I want to thank Coach Nagy and Athletic Director Tim Leonard for their trust in me," said Hawkins. "I am thrilled to be part of such a talented and driven coaching staff."
Hawkins’ career in coaching spans nearly 40 years, with positions that include 28 years as a head coach. His prior experience with Western Michigan and Quincy University has added substantial value to his current role at Southern Illinois, where his new duties will also include managing the Salukis' NIL efforts.
Athletic Director Tim Leonard praised Hawkins, saying, "Coach Hawkins has been a vital part of our program over the past year, and his experience coaching at this level is unparalleled."
Hawkins resides in Carterville with his family and has left a significant mark on the teams he has coached, including a record of achievements with Western Michigan and Quincy University.
