SIH has reaffirmed its commitment to expectant families following changes in provider coverage. Despite Heartland Women’s Healthcare's decision to cease labor and delivery services from January 31, 2025, SIH assures the community that the Birthing Center at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale will continue operations.
Heartland Women’s Healthcare informed SIH on December 4, 2024, about their plan to discontinue these services as part of their "strategic goals and operational plans."
SIH acknowledges the challenges this poses for growing families. The organization is committed to providing comprehensive care at the Birthing Center with a team of skilled obstetricians, midwives, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, and staff. They express gratitude towards Southern Illinois Ob-Gyn Associates and Shawnee Health for their collaboration in overcoming these challenges.
To ensure high-quality care, SIH has partnered with OBHG to establish an inpatient obstetrician hospitalist program. This program will be fully staffed by spring and will offer an in-house obstetrician for 24/7 emergency services and support. This initiative aims to alleviate demands on current OBs and midwives while enhancing care for expectant families.
"Our priority is, and always will be, the health and well-being of our patients," stated Terri Pursell, Director of Women and Children’s Services at SIH. "The Birthing Center will remain a place of safe, compassionate care for every stage of pregnancy."
SIH emphasizes transparency and communication during this transition period. Patients with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the Birthing Center at 618.549.0721 extension 65200.
Additionally, patients affected by Heartland Women’s decision should reach out to their provider’s office for guidance on delivery options.
