Southern Illinois basketball coach Jack Hartman has been chosen for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame's 2024 class. The announcement was made on Tuesday afternoon, marking Hartman as the second Saluki to receive this honor, following SIU and NBA legend Walt Frazier.
The 2024 class includes seven other inductees: Dave Meyers (UCLA), Sihugo Green (Duquesne), Lennie Rosenbluth (North Carolina), Wayne Estes (Utah State), Sam Lacey (New Mexico State), John Rudometkin (USC), and Tom Stith (St. Bonaventure). The ceremony celebrating these individuals will be held at a future date.
Hartman's coaching career at Southern Illinois University saw his teams achieve significant success. Over eight seasons, his record stood at 144-64, with the team spending 35 weeks ranked in the NCAA College Division poll's top ten, including 16 weeks at number one. Notable achievements include five postseason appearances in his first five years and a National Invitation Tournament championship in 1967. During that season, he coached players such as Walt Frazier and Dick Garrett.
After SIU transitioned to the University Division, Hartman continued to coach for three more seasons before moving to Kansas State for 16 seasons. There, he accumulated 296 wins, earned three Big Eight regular-season titles, two Big Eight Tournament titles, and received two Big Eight Coach of the Year awards along with an NABC Coach of the Year accolade in 1981.
Prior to his time at SIU, Hartman led Coffeyville Community College to a NJCAA Championship in 1962. His contributions extended beyond college basketball; in 1983 he helped guide the United States men's national team to a gold medal at the Pan American Games.
Over his career spanning SIU and Kansas State, Hartman achieved a total of 438 wins. His legacy is recognized by multiple hall of fame inductions: Southern Illinois University Hall of Fame in 1986, Kansas State University Hall of Fame and Kansas State Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, National Junior College Hall of Fame in 1991, culminating with this year's induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
