Southern Illinois University concluded its 2024 cross country season at the Midwest Regional Championship in Peoria, Illinois. The women's team finished 32nd in the 6K race, while the men's team placed 29th in the 10K event.
Head Coach Angelina Ramos reflected on the regional championship and her inaugural season with the Salukis. "Our SIU men and women competitors sincerely appreciated the love they felt from Saluki alumni, Saluki parents, and Saluki friends, family, and former high school coaches supporting them through the race (with special thanks to alumni like David B, Bob S, and more)," said Ramos. She added that despite not achieving their desired results this season, acknowledging their current standing is crucial for future growth.
The men's team saw Weston Jokerst finish 136th with a time of 32:01.69. Other notable finishes included Uriah Guthrie at 184th (33:26.96), Ben Chance at 186th (33:34.39), Will Foltz at 187th (33:37.00), and Ben Morgan at 199th (41:47.82). On the women's side, Hannah Meiser led with a finish in 178th place (22:46.68), followed by Brianna Nieset in 188th (22:56.66), Audrey Boles in 204th (23:10.90), Riley Linville in 218th (23:35.40), and Brodie Denny in 226th (24:21.67).
Coach Ramos acknowledged challenges within the program but expressed optimism about its future direction. "Admittedly, we are thin in numbers as a group from a depth perspective," she stated, emphasizing her responsibility to recruit effectively and maintain athlete health for improved performances.
Ramos continued by expressing her belief in her athletes' potential despite recent setbacks: "Today was hard...but today's punch to the gut was also necessary." She remains committed to fostering a growth mindset among her athletes as they aim for significant achievements on track.
Looking ahead, four male runners will return next year alongside six female runners as they aim to build upon this season's experiences toward greater success.
The Saluki distance runners will now focus on preparing for their indoor track and field season starting with the Saluki Fast Start event scheduled for December 6-7 in Carbondale.
