Southern Illinois athletes receive MVC weekly honors for swimming and diving

Three members of the Southern Illinois swimming and diving team have been recognized with weekly honors by the Missouri Valley Conference, as announced today.

Alex Santiago was named Swimmer of the Week. During a recent dual meet against UIC, Santiago secured first place in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. He also participated in the victorious 400-yard medley relay team and 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Sophomore diver Oliver Mebs was awarded Diver of the Week. Mebs achieved first place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 343.58 and recorded a personal best in the 1-meter dive, finishing third with a score of 301.73.

Freshman Willem Huggins received Freshman of the Week honors after achieving four first-place finishes during Saturday's meet against UIC. He won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, with his time of 1:48.29 in the 200 backstroke meeting NCAA "B" standard requirements. Huggins also contributed to victories in both the 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
