Southern Illinois Men's Golf team concluded their participation in the Everett Buick GMC Classic Invitational on Tuesday, securing the 14th position out of 16 teams. The team completed the tournament with a total score of 893 (+29), trailing by 45 strokes behind Little Rock, who emerged as the tournament champion.
Head coach Justin Fetcho commented on the team's performance, expressing concerns about their mental readiness. "We had another tough week, mentally we are not at the level that we need to be at," said Fetcho. He emphasized his responsibility in improving practice sessions to better prepare the team.
Anthony De Schutter was the leading player for Southern Illinois, tying for 41st place with a score of 223 (+7). After an impressive first round with a score of 70 (-2), he faced challenges in the second round scoring 80 (+8), but managed to recover in the third round with a score of 73 (+1).
The other Salukis' results were as follows:
- Carsen Silliman: Tied for 49th with +8 (224)
- Leon Heitz: Tied for 57th with +10 (226)
- Oliver Ulrich: Tied for 60th with +11 (227)
- Frank Bellino: Tied for 79th with +15 (231)
Fetcho noted areas needing improvement, stating, "We are making too many unforced errors, trying to press too much, and losing confidence quickly." The team plans to address these issues before their next event.
Looking ahead, Southern Illinois will participate in their final fall season tournament at the Ka'anapali Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii on Saturday, November 2.
