Herrin City Library Board of Trustees met Sept. 10.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Present Jones, Hickman, Maloney, Sarver, Priest, Frost

Also Present: Library Director Susan Mullen

Absent: Guebert, McKeown, Watson

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by President Jones.

Correspondence: None

Secretary’s Report: Frost moved to approve the minutes from August 2024. Sarver seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:

  1. Bills to be Paid: Maloney moved to approve the payment of $2,259.14 for expenses incurred from August 14 – August 31, 2024, and $2,325.73 for expenses incurred from September 1 – September 10, 2024. Priest seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
  2. City Budget Report: Last month’s report shows that 38.5% of the budget has been spent, with 33.3% of the fiscal year completed, leaving a checking account balance of $87,768.12.  Priest moved to approve the report. Frost seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
  3. Financial Balance Statement: Sarver moved to approve the Library balance report from the previous month. Priest seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
Librarian’s Report:

August 2024 had a 2% increase in circulation compared to August 2023. A total of 403 unique Borrowers Cards were used. Patrons placed a total of 332 Hold Requests. A total of 419 Hold Requests were filled (borrowed.) The Illinois Heartland Delivery Van dropped off a total of 737 titles at the Herrin City Library. We loaned 412 titles to other libraries and borrowed 712 titles from the other Heartland SHARE Libraries. We registered a total of 31 new borrowers: 21 Adult, 8 Juvenile, and 1 Non-Resident Renewal, bringing us to 5,717 registered borrowers. A total of 141 new titles were added to the collection in August, making a total of 42,310 volumes in the collection. Website traffic for the month was 2,672 page views. The Library Director attended the IHLS Director’s Chat on August 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29, and the Lawyer in the Library organization meeting via ZoomonAugust 27. The Lawyer in the Library program begins September 13, 2024. Susan, Kathleen Jones, and Jennifer Frost moved two maturing CDs at People’s National Bank and Banterra Bank to Bank of Herrin, as well as moved money from savings to checking on August 20th.The Dolly Parton Imagination Library Launch Party was hosted August 1st. HCL will participate in the IHLS annual Library Crawl program in October. The Library Director wrote and received a mini-grant from the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. The BOT will begin our PerCapita Grant requirements by reading Chapters 1-5 of Serving Our Public 4.0.

Children’s Librarian’s Report: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Event was held August 1st at 10:30 am. Information about the program was shared and the kids did a Dolly Parton themed craft while listening to her children’s album. Eight adults and 11 children in attendance. WSIL News 3 covered the event.

  • Friends Liaison (Maloney): none
  • History Room (Hickman, McKeown): Report submitted by Lisa Carnaghi.  Research was conducted for ten patrons.  HHR Room Facebook page reached 8,200 visits over the last 30 days. Completed working on the 2025 calendar in celebration of Herrin’s 125th anniversary. Lisa is currently researching a 1959 Christmas murder for a possible presentation this fall.

  • Review & approve one CD maturing and to be renewed
    • The Board discussed keeping the CD maturing October 1, 2024 at Banterra Bank for 7 months at 4.89%.
    • Sarver moved to approve these changes. Frost seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
  • Begin review of Serving Our Public 4.0: Standards for Illinois Public Libraries for PerCapita Grant requirements
