Herrin City Library Board of Trustees met Tuesday, May 21.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Present Frost, Hickman, Maloney, Priest, Sarver, Watson

Also Present: Library Director Susan Mullen

Absent: Jones, Guebert, McKeown

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by Vice President Priest.

Correspondence: None

Secretary’s Report: Frost moved to approve the minutes from April 2024. Sarver seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:

Bills to be Paid: Sarver moved to approve the payment of $1,550.08 for expenses incurred from April 10 – April 30, 2024, and $3,809.62 for expenses incurred from May 1 – May 21, 2024. Watson seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

City Budget Report: Last month’s report shows that 98.8% of the budget has been spent, with 100% of the fiscal year completed, leaving a checking account balance of $109,023.02.  Watson moved to approve the report. Frost seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Financial Balance Statement: Frost moved to approve the Library balance report from the previous month. Watson seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Librarian’s Report:

April 2024 had an 8.3% increase in circulation compared to April 2023. A total of 334 unique Borrowers Cards were used. Patrons placed a total of 526 Hold Requests. A total of 494 Hold Requests were filled (borrowed.) The Illinois Heartland Delivery Van dropped off a total of 868 titles at the Herrin City Library. We loaned 405 titles to other libraries and borrowed 919 titles from the other Heartland SHARE Libraries.  We registered a total of 22 new borrowers in April: 17 Adult, 5 Juvenile, and 2 Non-Resident Cards: both renewals. As of the end of April, the Herrin City Library had a total of 5,580 registered borrowers. The Library Director attended the IHLS Director’s Chat on April 4 & 18, 2024. Michaelann Stanley will present DIEC: an Italian Documentary, on Friday, May 24. Lisa Carnaghi is also hosting the HerrinFesta Poster Contest display at the library. The Friends of the Library Open House was Sunday, April 28, 2024 with 75 people in attendance. We will review the data for the IPLAR, as well as discuss the new iLead website. Summer Reading begins Thursday, June 6th.

Children’s Librarian’s Report: On April 4, 2024, we held the Rain Story Hour with 9 children and 6 adults.  On April 18, 2024, we held the Chickens Story Hour with 7 children and 5 adults.

Committee Reports:

Friends Liaison (Maloney): New officers were elected at the Annual Meeting. The next book sale is set tentatively for July 2024.  The April wish list was approved for $1,597.68.  The Friends of the Herrin City Library presently has 78 members.

History Room (Hickman, McKeown): Report submitted by Lisa Carnaghi.  Research was conducted for several patrons both by appointment and walk-in.  HHR Room Facebook page reached 7,808 visits over the last 30 days. The HerrinFesta Poster Contest will be hosted at the library, along with memorabilia from previous HerrinFestas. Plans made for a Herrin Then & Now photo display once the poster contest is over.

Director Mullen applied for a grant: Lawyer in the Library. Will be taking place in October and November

Discussed the potential for needing another part time employee
