City of Genoa Police Pension Board met April 16.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

1. Call to Order / Roll Call

The City of Carbondale Board of Fire and Police Commissioners held a meeting on Monday, April 15, 2024, in Carbondale Civic Center Room 103; 200 South Illinois Avenue. Chairperson Randy Burnside called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

Commissioners Present: Randy Burnside, Tom Busch, Mike Dismore, Linda Flowers and John Michalesko

Commissioners Absent:

Also present were Deputy City Clerk Clinette Hayes, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Coordinator Sharonda Cawthon, Fire Chief Mike Hertz and Fire Chief Rob Miller.

2. Citizen’s Comments - None

3. Approval of the Meeting Minutes from February 15, 2024

MOTION: J. Michalesko moved, T. Busch seconded, that the Board approve the meeting minutes from February 15, 2024. VOTE: All ayes. Nays – None. Motion declared carried.

4. Closed Meeting to Conduct Oral Interviews for Entry Level Firefighter

MOTION: T. Busch moved, M. Dismore seconded, that the Board hold a closed meeting for the purpose of discussing the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees pursuant to 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1), specifically to conduct oral interviews for Entry Level Firefighter. VOTE: All Ayes. Nays – None. Motion declared carried. Open session recessed at 9:03 a.m.

5. Return to Open Session

There was no formal action taken as a result of the closed meeting. There being no further business to come before the Board, L. Flowers moved, T. Busch seconded, that the Board return to open session. VOTE: All Ayes. Nays – None. Motion declared carried. Open session resumed at 12:58 p.m.

6. City Staff Updates / Comments

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Coordinator Sharonda Cawthon announced that 5 new police officers have been sworn in.

7. Board Comments

Members of the Board all agreed that oral interview questions #1 and #4 needs revision so that the candidates can answer those questions as it relates to their career as a firefighter. This would also apply to police officer candidates as well.

A reminder was given to staff about providing members of the Board a listing of questions or follow up questions that are permissible during oral interviews as discussed during the previous meeting.

8. Adjournment - Meeting adjourned at 1:03 p.m.
