State Senator Terri Bryant | Illinois General Assembly
State Senator Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) is advising residents and businesses in southern Illinois on best practices following severe thunderstorms and tornadoes that occurred Sunday evening.
Senator Bryant provided the following recommendations for those who have experienced significant storm damage:
- Report fallen trees, flooded streets, or damaged public utilities to the appropriate department, including local city or county emergency management agencies.
- Assess any damage to homes or immediate surroundings. Be aware of potential hazards such as ruptured gas lines, structural damage, downed electrical lines, and localized flooding. Report any injuries or hazards via 911 immediately.
- Take pictures of all storm damage.
- Keep track of labor involved in cleaning up storm damage, including hours and costs.
- For major damage to homes, businesses, or buildings, there may be potential property tax benefits. Contact the local county treasurer for details.
- Avoid entering any building that appears structurally damaged or poses other hazards.
- Do not enter disaster areas as it may add to confusion and hamper emergency response efforts.
- Monitor major electrical appliances like refrigerators and freezers for hidden damages that might not be immediately apparent.
- Use generators outdoors and away from windows to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators, camp stoves, or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows.
- Disconnect electronics and equipment to prevent damage from electrical surges when power returns.
- Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices. Discard medication that should be refrigerated if the power is out for more than a day unless otherwise stated on the drug’s label. Consult a doctor or pharmacist if a life depends on refrigerated drugs until a new supply is available.
- Research thoroughly when working with tree removal companies, contractors, roofers, etc., as scammers often follow storms.
"My prayers are with the families and businesses that have been impacted by storm damage after Sunday night’s severe thunderstorms and tornadoes," Bryant said. "As cleanup continues, we thank our first responders, electric restoration crews, and local elected officials for their quick response. My office stands ready to assist individuals and businesses with any inquiries they may have regarding the storm cleanup and response."
