Republican lawmakers in Illinois are raising concerns over the growing costs associated with providing services to undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers. The estimated taxpayer spending on non-citizens in Illinois has reached a staggering $2.84 billion since July 1, 2022, excluding education costs and other services.

According to reports, healthcare costs for undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers alone have surpassed $2 billion over a two-year period. This includes significant allocations in state budgets for various healthcare expenses. Meanwhile, Illinois residents are facing insurance premiums and co-pays, while non-citizens are not contributing to their healthcare costs, placing the burden on taxpayers.

The significant funds directed towards undocumented immigrants are drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers who question the priorities of Illinois Democrats. These expenditures are diverting resources that could be used to support essential programs for all Illinois citizens, especially the elderly and economically vulnerable.

Illinois stands out as one of the few states providing Medicare-like benefits to undocumented immigrants, all funded by taxpayers. In response to these concerns, House Republican lawmakers have introduced legislation to halt healthcare benefits for non-citizens and to repeal the Illinois Trust Act, which designated Illinois as a Sanctuary State for immigrants and migrants.
