Illinois state Rep. Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) celebrated the start of Women's History Month in a March 1 Facebook post.

"March is Women’s History Month — a celebration of the great women who have led our nation forward throughout history," he said in the post. "Join us in recognizing the amazing achievements of women from Illinois and across the U.S. this month. Happy Women’s History Month!"

The theme of this year's celebration is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories," a release from the National Women's History Alliance said.

Women's rights have taken on many trials of justice throughout history.

Women's History Month dates back to 1978 when the Sonoma, Calif., School District held a week-long celebration of women; a History.com report said. There were presentations at schools, a “Real Woman” essay contest, and a parade held in downtown Santa Rosa.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. Six years later, Congress expanded the celebration of women's history to the entire month of March.

In honor of Women's History Month, there are events taking place across Illinois at universities and public organizations.

The Field Museum is focused on sharing the stories of women in the field of natural sciences. Events include professional seminars, opportunities to meet scientists in "Meet a Scientist" events, and a Playlab Storytime with Dr. Lesley de Souza.

Windhorst was elected as a state representative to the Illinois House in 2018, the General Assembly website said. His legislative experience includes serving on the Restorative Justice and Judiciary - Criminal committees. He resides in Metropolis.
