Carbondale Non-Bargaining Unit Employees Personnel Board recently issued the following announcement.
CARBONDALE NON-BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEES PERSONNEL BOARD: Operation of Non-Licensed Vehicles Upon City Streets
With the coming of warmer weather, a wider variety of motorized and non-motorized vehicles may be seen operating upon the streets of Carbondale.
The City of Carbondale Police Department would like to remind motorists to be aware of the increased traffic volume and to inform residents of what is illegal to operate on the roadways in the City.
Chapter 18, section 15-23 of the Carbondale Revised Ordinance prohibits operation of a motorized or electric scooter, a pocket bike, all-terrain vehicle, an off highway motorcycle, golf cart or other similar device upon the public streets or other public property, including, but not limited to, parks, rights of way, parking lots, or sidewalks unless that vehicle is properly registered, insured, and complies with all other laws of the Illinois vehicle code, including that the driver be in possession of a valid driver's license and liability insurance.
Exceptions to the ordinance are motorized wheelchairs and neighborhood vehicles as defined in Chapter 16 of the Carbondale Revised Code. A link to the ordinances and applicable state statute can be found at the end of this release. Anyone who needs more information is encouraged to contact the police department at 618-457-3200
