Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
For Kids’ Sake, a non-profit organization that fundraises for orphans and students in Bangladesh, is hosting an Art Reception at The Anna Arts Center 125 W Davies St, Anna, IL on October 14th from 2pm-4pm. The show will run from Oct 9 - Oct 31 and will highlight the remarkable paintings of Kamal Talukder, who was a deaf artist from rural Bangladesh.
While living in Bangladesh, Kamal heard about the For Kids' Sake program and the annual Art Auction in Carbondale. Inspired to support the program, he sent his art to the For Kids’ Sake headquarters in Carbondale, where it is sold at events and through personal sales. Since his passing in the spring of 2015, For Kids' Sake holds the last of this inspiring art collection. The sale of his art continues to support the children in Bangladesh as well as his family.
The paintings of Kamal Talukder are contemporary interpretations of life as a deaf person in Bangladesh. Strong shapes, complex compositions and vibrant colors offer a reflective and contemplative artistic experience. The focus on abstract shapes and an emphasis on eyes are a feature particularly related to Kamal’s experience as a deaf artist.
The upcoming reception is also a chance to browse beautiful, handcrafted gift items from Bangladesh. The textile arts of Bangladesh offered by For Kids’ Sake combine traditional dyed and Nakshakantha embroidered fabric with ink stamped designs. Nakshakantha textiles are a form of quilted embroidery made by collectives of Bangladesh village artisans. The larger textiles are used as bed covers or hangings. Smaller textiles can be framed or have been made into handbags and small purses.
All proceeds from the gift sales will go to supporting orphans and students in Bangladesh. Everyone is invited to support the kids while viewing vibrant art, enjoying free refreshments and buying unique gifts.
