CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: The Stage Company Presents Open Auditions for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Auditions for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike will be held on October 15 and 16, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at The Varsity Center, 418 South Illinois Avenue, Carbondale

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a comedy play written by Christopher Durang. The story revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together, and takes place during a visit by the third, Masha, who supports them. They discuss their lives and loves, argue, and Masha threatens to sell the house. Some of the show's elements were derived from works of Anton Chekhov, including several character names, the play's setting in a cherry orchard, and the theme of the possible loss of an ancestral home.

Seeking actors of all ages (16 to 70), diverse roles.

Two male and four female roles available.

Character descriptions:

Vanya – 40-60 living in Bucks County. Resigned to his life, more or less, at least compared to Sonia.

Sonia – His adopted sister, 35-60, living with him in Bucks County. Discontent, upset, regretful.

Masha – His sister, 40-60, glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world.

Spike – An aspiring actor, 29 or younger, sexy, self-absorbed, Masha’s new companion.

Nina – Lovely, sincere would be actress, early 20s, visiting her aunt and uncle next door. Star struck and energetic.

Cassandra – Cleaning lady and soothsayer, any age, any race/gender.

No monologues required, cold readings from the script will be provided.

Performance dates are November 30-December 2 & 6-9.

About the author: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is the 2013 Tony-award winning play written by playwright and actor Christopher Durang. A writer known for works of outrageous and sometimes absurd comedy, some of his other plays include Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, Beyond Therapy, Betty's Summer Vacation, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, 'Dentity Crisis, and The Actor's Nightmare.

Durang is a veteran stage actor and has appeared in number of feature films as well. He is also a singer. In 1993 he sang in the five person off-Broadway Sondheim revue, Putting It Together, with Julie Andrews at the Manhattan Theatre Club.

Since 1994 he has been co-chair with Marsha Norman of the Playwriting Program at the Juilliard School in Manhattan. Durang is also a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame.

Mr. Durang received a B.A. in English from Harvard and the M.F.A. in playwrighting from Yale. His husband is actor and playwright John Augustine. They reside in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

About the director: Tricia Beth Burns is a graduate of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, earning a BFA in Theatre. She has been working with The Stage Company since 2008 but has been involved in over thirty productions within the Southern Illinois area, most recently she appeared last season’s Almost Identical. This will be the third show that she has directed for The Stage Company; last season she directed The Games' Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays. She is looking forward to bringing this amazing, funny show to life!
