Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
“The Princess Bride,” a fairytale for all ages, will show at The Varsity on Friday Sept. 21.
First released in 1987, “The Princess Bride” is directed by Rob Reiner and stars Peter Falk as a grandfather reading a fairytale to his grandson Fred Savage. Also starring Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, and André the Giant.
Our fairytale involves the handsome Westley who must return to his country of Florin to prevent Buttercup, his fiancé who believes he has been killed, from marrying the cruel Prince Humperdinck. But, before the wedding, she is kidnapped by three outlaws: a short Sicilian boss named Vizzini, a gigantic wrestler from Greenland named Fezzik, and a Spanish fencing master named Inigo Montoya.
After many adventures, the thieves unite with Westley and invade the castle. Humperdinck panics and orders the wedding ceremony shortened. While Inigo has a score to settle with Rugen, Humperkinck’s sadistic accomplice, taunting him: "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
“The Princess Bride” is swashbuckling fun for the whole family. And don’t worry, the story doesn’t have too much kissing.
The Varsity will show “The Princess Bride” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept 21. Tickets are $7 or $5 for students and are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the venue on the night of the show when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.
