Murphysboro Community Unit School District 186 students suspended 479 times in a single school year

Murphysboro Community Unit School District 186 reported 479 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 479 students during the year. That equates to 22 percent of the 2,175 students enrolled.

Of the 263 in-school suspensions, 171 were given to boys and 92 were given to girls.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 245 incidents. There were 16 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 246 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 216 out-of-school suspensions, 149 were given to boys and 67 were given to girls, including 48 elementary or middle schoolers and 168 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 160 incidents. There were 40 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 119 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
