Marion Community Unit School District 2 students suspended 500 times in a single school year

Marion Community Unit School District 2 reported 500 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 500 students during the year. That equates to 12.3 percent of the 4,055 students enrolled.

Of the 324 in-school suspensions, 226 were given to boys and 98 were given to girls.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 299 incidents. There were 13 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 133 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.

Of the 176 out-of-school suspensions, 116 were given to boys and 60 were given to girls, including 45 elementary or middle schoolers and 131 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 111 incidents. There were 45 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 64 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
