Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

In anticipation of the release of Spike Lee’s Cannes-winning upcoming film “Blackkklansman” coming out Aug. 10, The Varsity will show Spike Lee’s classic film “Do the Right Thing” Friday Aug. 3 at 7 p.m.

“Do the Right Thing” stars Spike Lee, John Turturro, Rosie Perez, Danny Aiello and Samuel L. Jackson. It’s the hottest day of the year on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, bigotry smolders. Mookie (Spike Lee) is a 25-year-old delivery man raising his son with his girlfriend Tina (Rosie Perez). He works at the local pizzeria. Sal (Danny Aiello), the pizzeria's Italian-American owner, has been in the neighborhood for 25 years. His older son Pino (John Turturro) and Mookie intensely dislike each other.

When regular costumers Buggin’ Out and Radio Rahem demand that Sal put some Black Americans on the pizzeria’s Wall of Fame, the fight spills into the street where the police insert themselves. When one officer chokes Rahem to death, the community fights back.

The film received numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Aiello's portrayal of Sal the pizzeria owner. Do the Right Thing is listed on the top 100 American Movies ever made by the American Film Institute.

The Varsity will show “Do the Right Thing” at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3.

Tickets are $5 and are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the venue on the night of the show when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.

“Do the Right Thing” is rated R for adult situations and language, sex and graphic violence. Anyone under 17 requires an accompanying parent or adult guardian.

The Varsity is in downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. Keep up with upcoming events at www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
