Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Photographer Hazel Grant will be the newest art exhibitor at The Varsity. The exhibit opens Aug. 17.

A native of Alabama, Hazel became interested in photography while living in Redding, California. There, most of her photography work was associated with a college magazine she edited. After moving to Carbondale in 2006, her photography passion grew into a serious pursuit. She sharpened her skills through two classes at John A. Logan College, one class at SIU and through online sources such as birdphotographers.net.

The Varsity exhibit primarily focuses on nature, an interest that has grown because of the beautiful Southern Illinois landscapes, birds and animals.

Grant’s work has been chosen three times in the juried Shrode Photography Competition at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mount Vernon, where she won first place and honorable mention. Her works have also been juried into the Art Through the Lens international exhibit three times and into that competition’s regional exhibit twice. Two of her pieces are displayed Southern Illinois Healthcare office at University Mall in Carbondale.

A reception for the artist will be hosted opening night, Aug. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. The Varsity bar will be open for cash purchases and features beer, wine, special cocktails and snacks.

The Varsity is at 418 S. Illinois Ave., in downtown Carbondale. To keep up with upcoming events, go to facebook.com/varsitycenter or thevarsitycenter.org.
