Man

Touch of Nature Environmental Center recently issued the following announcement.

A Carbondale man was charged Monday for falsely making a threat to blow up a Carbondale Military Recruiting Center, according to Donald Boyce, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

George Rita, 42, was arrested and charged Friday for posting a threatening anonymous message to a FBI tip line in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The message claimed that the sender planned to go to a recruitment center and blow it up and that no one could stop him. No location was given for the threatened recruitment center.

FBI agents determined the threat came from Southern Illinois and tracked the internet connection to Rita’s Carbondale apartment.

Rita is officially charged with maliciously conveying false information regarding bomb threat. The violation carries a possible 10-year prison sentence and a fine up to $250,000. Rita was ordered to be detained in federal custody pending further court proceedings.
