John A. Logan College recently issued the following announcement.

John A. Logan College took a step closer this week to being a major player in one of the largest solar energy projects in Illinois.

The John A. Logan College Board of Trustees approved a proposal from Straightup Solar in St. Louis to construct a two megawatt solar array to be located on 11 acres of the College’s 169-acre campus.

Straightup Solar has installed more than 950 residential and commercial-scale solars project in Illinois and Missouri.

As part of the College’s land-use deal with Straightup Solar, Straightup would provide energy to the College at a locked rate for up to 25 years and provide up to 40 percent of the College’s overall electricity needs. The College could see a savings of more than $800,000 through this deal, noted Brad McCormick, vice-president for business services and college facilities.

Property proposed for the solar project is located at the northeast corner of the campus property and currently overrun with autumn olive.

Straightup has agreed to use local union labor on the project.

The project could be completed as soon as 2020.

The board of trustees also approved proposed improvements to the John A. Logan College Historical Village. Included in the improvements are:

— Structural repairs to the Hunter Cabin.

— Exterior lighting matching the historical period of the Harrison-Bruce home.

— Replacement of siding and windows and replacement of wall seals to Purdy School.

A contract for the improvements was awarded to WF Stift, Inc.
