SIU's Greenfield smiles at the birdies

Southern Illinois University's (SIU) Matt Greenfield was named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Seminole Intercollegiate at Florida State University, the school announced recently.

Greenfield finished in 14th place after shooting a career-best minus-6. He was under par on all three rounds and finished with a whopping 13 birdies for the tournament.

SIU head golf coach Justin Fetcho said he was happy to see all the practice Greenfield has been putting in pay off on the course and in competition.

"Matt has been working hard on his game, and he finally saw some good results last week," Fetcho told the Carbondale Reporter. "Matt is very gritty on the course. He hits it a long way as well. His short game is usually very sharp, and that was the case last week. He always seems to find a way to make a par when he needs to get a ball up and down."

This is the third time the senior has garnered the golfer of the week honor, and he's also been one of the leaders for the Salukis.

"He is always very positive toward the younger players," Fetcho said. "He always tries to keep them motivated and pushes them to be at their best."

Greenfield is undecided on his plans after finishing his senior year, but whatever path he chooses, he's laid down a firm groundwork for success off the golf course as well. He's the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative for SIU as well as being active in charity in the local area -- all experiences that will serve him well after graduation.

"Matt is one of our SAAC representatives," Fetcho said. "Like all of our guys, he also supports the other Saluki sports and does community service."

The Salukis finished in eighth place out of 14 teams at the Seminole Intercollegiate event.
