The Carbondale Fire Department warns local residents to be aware of a potential phone scam in which the caller pretends to work for the organization.
The City of Carbondale said that a resident reported receiving a call from someone stating they worked for the fire department. The caller asked if the resident had a smoke detector and fire extinguisher in their home and asked if the person had an escape plan. The city's announcement did not state whether the called tried to sell any products or services to the resident.
Firefighters and fire department employees will never call residents to sell products or services, the city said. If you receive a similar call, please call the Carbondale Police Department at 618-457-3200.
Never divulge personal information or financial information to callers asking for it. If you aren't sure whether a call is legitimate, hang up.
