SIU Carbondale accepting applications for Green Fund awards

Solar%2520panel1

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is currently accepting applications for its next cycle of Green Fund awards, which support sustainability projects on the SIU Carbondale campus.

The initiative began in 2009, with the adoption of a $10 Green Fee paid by students each semester. Through the past few years, the program has already seen more than $2 million disbursed for 153 projects on campus.

“The Green Fund allows students to actively engage in important research that finds sustainable solutions to issues that impact not only those at SIU, but potentially the lives of everyone on this planet,” senior industrial design major Trevor Jones, who is a Green Fund grant recipient, said in a press release. “It’s a great way for students to create a lasting impact that will benefit the lives of those yet to come, and its aim is toward solutions that we can all agree actually matter.”

The initiative is open to SIU students, faculty or staff and can be awarded to both individuals and groups. Projects should focus on campus sustainability, with projects that promote education, outreach and research being preferred.

Those interested in applying for Green Funds should do so by March 1. Recipients will be announced April 21.
