From aviation to zoology, girls will have a chance to explore an array of career options at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale’s 26th Annual STEM-oriented event Saturday, Nov. 19, with advance enrollment open until Nov. 4.
SIU Carbondale’s annual “Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics” conference for girls is slated for the student center. Each year, SIU focuses on female students in the fifth through ninth grades, offering workshops, meeting opportunities and interactive learning experiences to bolster their grasp of potential STEM careers. With the conference comes a natural chance to meet role models who can provide inspiration and/or guidance.
Event coordinators anticipate a maximum of 120 attendees, plus parents and teachers across Southern Illinois. Advance registration is required and can be completed by visiting http://math.siu.edu/eyh/online-registration.php.
Check-in will be just prior to the event from 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on Nov. 19. The program starts at 9:15 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. Students will attend three hands-on workshops, and lunch is provided. Tickets cost $10 up until the deadline; and $17 from Nov. 5 until Nov. 10.
Subjects from which to choose workshops include aviation, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering and technology, geology, geography, linguistics, math, medicine, plant biology, psychology and zoology.
