Student veterans who are outdoor enthusiasts should mark their calendars ahead of various “Veteran Adventures” planned for the 2016-17 school year by Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale, including canoeing, camping, hunting and more.
The institution’s itinerary begins with an Oct. 8-11 trip to Missouri’s Eleven Point River for canoeing, portage and three nights of riverside camping at a cost of $50.
Dec. 9-11, student vets can learn about the finer details of deer hunting on the 3,100-acre Touch of Nature Environmental Center, on Giant City Road south of Carbondale, with assistance from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, plus local hunting and trapping specialists, for $100.
Later in the academic year, a trip is in the works for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee March 11-19, 2017, with backpacking and camping amid mountains and streams, also for $100.
All outdoor adventures are open to any veteran enrolled either at SIU or at other regional colleges. The prices listed include all fees for transportation, food, gear and support materials. The affordable prices are due partly to a collaboration between SIU’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center and Veterans Services.
Students can register until one week before the desired event by visiting www.veteranadventures.siu.edu. For more information, contact Shane Brady at 618/453-1121 or by email at tonec@siu.edu.
