Southern Illinois University Carbondale announced on Mar. 12 that its Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center will host the second annual Friends and Family Camp from May 1-3. The event is open to people of all ages and aims to provide a relaxing weekend for families and friends to reconnect through outdoor activities.

The camp offers an opportunity for participants to step away from daily routines and spend quality time together. Organizers say the event is designed as a return to simpler times, with evenings around campfires, arts and crafts, live music under the stars, and high-adventure activities such as a giant swing.

Brian Croft, director of Touch of Nature and the Office of Sustainability, said, “Touch of Nature is the perfect backdrop to reconnect with your loved ones and friends through various outdoor activities and adventures or just by hanging out together in a beautiful place. Our staff has worked hard to take care of all the planning so visitors can just show up and have a great time. You can pick and choose to join in as many activities as you like, and the one-price reservation covers lodging, meals and all activities.”

The idea for Friends and Family Camp began after thousands visited Southern Illinois for the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Many guests chose Touch of Nature as their viewing spot, enjoying both the celestial event and camp amenities. Following positive feedback from those visitors, organizers held an inaugural camp in 2025 which was well received.

Activities during the weekend include hiking or biking trails near Shawnee National Forest, exploring arts programs, evening entertainment around campfires, or simply relaxing on site. Check-in runs from 3-7 p.m. on May 1 with checkout at 11 a.m. on May 3. The camp welcomes individuals attending alone as well as groups; pets are allowed outdoors if leashed while service animals may accompany guests indoors.

Pricing is set at $125 per person for ages 13 and older or $80 for children ages five through twelve; children four years old or younger attend free. More information about registration requirements—including what items participants should bring—can be found on the Friends and Family Camp webpage.
