THE SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN: SIU Carbondale chancellor to be buried at Mound City military cemetery

Cemetery

The Southern Illinoisan recently issued the following announcement.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno will be laid to rest with full military honors at Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City, Illinois, at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Montemagno served nine years in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps before becoming a respected nanotechnology researcher, and eventually the chancellor of SIUC.

The Mound City National Cemetery, Illinois’ southernmost military cemetery, is among the oldest national cemeteries in the country, according to the National Park Service.

During the Civil War, Mounds was home to a major hospital complex serving thousands of wounded. The cemetery was inaugurated in 1864, to receive the dead from hospitals in Mound City and Cairo. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Memorials in Montemagno’s honor may be made to This Able Veteran, a Carbondale-based organization that trains and provides service dogs to veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
