City of Carbondale Sustainability Commission met March 16.

Here is the minutes as provided by the commission:

1. Roll Call: Mr. Beck called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m.

Members Present: Mr. Beck, Mr. Kunath, Ms. Shimada, Mr. Grant

Members Absent: Mr. Thorne

Staff Present: Loren Polley

Others Present: Mr. Ed Ford, 2 Sierra Club members, Delores Bell, 3 CCHS students

from Government Class, Kris Schachel

Minutes: Mr. Kunath set a motion for approval of December 15th, 2016, minutes, 2nd by Ms.

Shimada, all in favor.

2. Communications:

Review of the current Status Report of the Former Koppers Wood-Treating Site. Updates should

be posted on website.

Old Business: Polystyrene Foam, Plastic bag ban Relook at Operating Papers. The papers will

include membership qualifications and identifications. Go Solar So Ill are running events. The

events can be found at Wbdx.org. Southern Illinois Rights Project has made progress toward

fracking and the negative effects on the local area. Brightfields is looking for a company to

install solar at the N. Marion location.

New Business: Look at “Shadow Fest” for water drinking stations. Possibly look at reusable

containers for drinking. Sierra Club would like the Commission to get behind localized solar

projects, non-profit partnerships, community allies, and competitive contractor selections. Sierra

Club would like the Commission to endorse a group solar buy. A proposal will be sent to the

Commission. Mr. Kunath nominated Mr. Beck for Chair of the Commission, all in favor. Mr.

Kunath self-nominated for Vice Chair, all in favor.
