Southern Illinois University’s women’s basketball team secured a 63-58 victory over the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) on Sunday in Carbondale. The win brings the Salukis’ record to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play, while UIC falls to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in conference.
Head coach Kelly Bond-White praised her team’s effort, stating, “The energy we brought for 40 minutes was tremendous.”
Indya Green led Southern Illinois with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Kayla Cooper, Alayna Kraus, and Kynnedi Davis also contributed double-digit points. Davis led the team with four assists.
The game saw several lead changes and ties throughout all four quarters. UIC took an early lead in the first quarter before Southern Illinois tied the game multiple times in the second quarter. By halftime, SIU held a narrow 28-24 advantage.
In the third quarter, both teams continued to trade baskets with neither side able to build a significant lead. The score remained close heading into the final period.
During the fourth quarter, SIU managed to maintain a slight edge despite repeated efforts by UIC to close the gap. With less than a minute remaining, Southern Illinois extended its lead to five points, securing the win as time expired.
Southern Illinois will conclude its five-game homestand on Thursday, January 22, hosting Indiana State at 6 p.m.
