Saluki Basketball Hall of Famer Mike “Stinger” Glenn will have his No. 34 jersey retired during the 2025–26 Southern Illinois University men’s basketball season. The specific date for the ceremony has not yet been set, and university officials said details will be announced once confirmed.
“Mike Glenn is the epitome of what it means to be a Saluki,” SIU Director of Athletics Tim Leonard said. “He excelled on the court and in the classroom. His legacy extends far beyond basketball, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to the Banterra Center for this momentous occasion.”
Glenn’s jersey will be only the third to be retired in program history, following Charlie “Chico” Vaughn (No. 20) and NBA Hall of Famer Walt Frazier (No. 52).
“It will be magical for the rest of my life,” Glenn said. “Something that I’ll always be proud of is that this is what I did at my university that meant so much to me. I’ll always treasure that and remember that forever.”
During his time at SIU, Glenn scored 1,878 points, making him fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list. He was part of the team that won the Missouri Valley Conference title in 1976–77 and reached the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. Glenn was also recognized as a two-time first-team Academic All-American and earned a degree in mathematics.
After college, he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1977 and played ten seasons in the NBA with teams including the Buffalo Braves, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and Milwaukee Bucks. Following his playing career, he worked as a sports broadcaster and author.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Glenn established a summer basketball camp for deaf and hard-of-hearing athletes in 1980; now in its 45th year.
This summer, SIU’s Morris Library Special Collections featured Glenn as part of its Freedom to Freedom celebration. He was introduced by Rosemary Sadlier—historian, author, and former president of the Ontario Black History Society—who played a role in establishing Canada’s Black History Month and Emancipation Day. During his appearance, Glenn shared insights from his collection of African American books and memorabilia.
