The Southern Illinois University Salukis women’s softball team lost 10-7 to Drake on April 11, ending their seven-game winning streak in the final game of a three-game series.
This result is significant for the Salukis, who had been performing strongly in the Missouri Valley Conference and entered the game with a record of 25-14 overall and 14-5 in conference play. The loss came after a competitive match that saw several lead changes and strong individual performances from both teams.
Drake took an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning. Southern Illinois responded with solo home runs by Maleah Blomenkamp and Hayden Kurtz, tying the score at 2-2 by the fourth inning. In the fifth, Sage Grann hit a two-run homer to give SIU its first lead of the day. Additional runs followed as Amanda Knutson singled home Brooklyn Pritchett and Kurtz doubled in Sydney Potter, pushing SIU ahead 6-2.
However, Drake answered back with five runs in their half of the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth to take control at 10-6. Knutson hit another solo home run for SIU in the seventh inning but it was not enough to overcome Drake’s lead.
The Southern Illinois University Salukis women’s softball team participates in NCAA Division I competitions according to the official website.
