Southern Illinois University’s men’s basketball team maintained its undefeated home record with a decisive 83-54 victory over UT Martin at the Banterra Center on Wednesday night.
UT Martin came into the game recognized for its strong defensive statistics, ranking among the top 25 nationally in opponent three-point shooting percentage, overall field goal percentage allowed, and scoring defense. However, Southern Illinois outperformed them defensively by holding UT Martin to just 25 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 34 percent overall. The Salukis forced 19 turnovers—a season high—while recording 12 steals and four blocks.
Senior Davion Sykes led Southern Illinois with 17 points and five rebounds. Freshman Jalen Haynes and sophomore Quel’Ron House each contributed 12 points, with House also providing six assists. One of his assists included a between-the-legs alley-oop to Sykes at the buzzer.
With Isaiah Stafford unavailable due to injury, sophomore Max Pikaar played a season-high 25 minutes, finishing with eight points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Senior Damien May added nine points along with five assists and two steals.
Coach Nagy highlighted his satisfaction with the team’s defensive performance: “Still, defense was what pleased Coach Nagy most.”
UT Martin struggled offensively during key stretches of the second half, going scoreless for five minutes while Southern Illinois executed consecutive 9-0 runs. The Salukis’ aggressive play resulted in drawing 13 free throws in the second half and putting UT Martin in foul trouble with five minutes left.
Southern Illinois will travel to face Richmond on Saturday, December 13. The team is set to begin Missouri Valley Conference play at home against Illinois State on Thursday, December 18 at 8 p.m., also at Banterra Center.
