Southern Illinois University will hold a free event called “What is Crypto?” on April 2, inviting the public to learn about cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. The summit, organized by the SIU Blockchain and Economics Club, will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Old Main Room of the Student Center.
The event aims to provide information about cryptocurrency’s technical aspects, legal considerations, economic impact, and personal experiences with trading digital assets. Organizers say it is designed for anyone interested in understanding this growing field.
Alyssa Eynon, president of the club and a junior majoring in finance and economics from Columbia, Illinois, said: “This is a great opportunity to learn about the interesting and increasingly prominent topic of cryptocurrency.”
Speakers include Henry Hexmoor, computer science professor; Thomas Reichert, assistant law professor at SIU Simmons Law School; Daniel Polotsky, founder and chairman of CoinFlip; Crystal Kendzior from CoinFlip; Scott Gilbert from the College of Business and Analytics; Alexander Brandenburger from Saint Anthony High School in Effingham; as well as other faculty members. Each presentation will be followed by a short question-and-answer session.
Attendees can enjoy a complimentary meal provided by Bandana’s Bar-B-Q. Those who download the CoinFlip app at the event using a QR code and create their first wallet will receive $10 in Bitcoin. While there is no cost to attend, pre-registration online is required by the morning of April 2.
The university encourages anyone interested—students or community members—to participate in this opportunity to explore current trends in digital currency.
