Southern Illinois University Carbondale will honor six faculty, staff, and students who have died during the 2025-2026 academic year with a ceremony scheduled for April 2 in the Student Center Ballrooms.
The event is intended as a time for reflection and remembrance, bringing together families and friends of those lost within the university community. The first Saluki Remembrance Day was held on April 16, 2025.
Chancellor Austin A. Lane said Saluki Remembrance Day serves as a pillar of support for those families and friends who have lost a loved one. “The passing of any member of our Saluki family affects us all. Saluki Remembrance Day serves as a solemn occasion for reflection. As we join the families in their grief, we hope this ceremony offers solace and honors the lasting impact of those we have lost to ensure their loved ones are never forgotten,” Lane said.
The ceremony will feature remarks from Lane and Sheryl Tucker, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. It will also include a poem written by Allison Joseph, professor in English, which will be read by a student; the reading of names of two students and four staff members who have passed away; presentation of memorial items to family members present; and a moment of silence. The School of Music’s Southern Brass quintet will perform as attendees arrive and later play SIU Carbondale’s “Alma Mater.”
Counselors from SIU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will be available at the event to provide assistance if needed.
More information about the event can be found on the Saluki Remembrance Day webpage.
