Southern Illinois University lost to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 16-6 in a baseball game on March 10 in Edwardsville. The game ended after eight innings due to the run rule.
The match started with strong offense from both teams. Kye Watson and Cecil Lofton each hit home runs, giving SIU an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. SIUE answered with a solo home run by Mack Mitchell.
Jaden Flores hit an RBI triple for SIU in the second inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Watson. However, SIUE responded with three runs of their own, putting pressure on the Salukis’ offense. Tim Simay added an RBI single for SIU in the third, but that would be their last run of the night.
From that point forward, SIUE scored at least one run in every remaining inning, including nine runs over the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. This offensive burst led to the early conclusion of the game under the run rule at 16-6.
This marks the second time this season that Southern Illinois has been defeated by run rule. The team will return home for a three-game series against Southern Indiana starting Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
