Oliver Ulrich, a junior on the Southern Illinois University men’s golf team, has established himself as a key contributor to the Salukis’ recent achievements. He currently ranks 20th all-time in stroke average at SIU, reflecting his consistent performance and importance to the program.
The Southern Illinois Salukis men’s golf team has shown strong results in collegiate tournaments and conference championships, as detailed on their official website. Players have also earned individual titles and weekly conference honors throughout the season.
In a recent interview with Saluki Athletics, Ulrich discussed his background in golf and what motivates him as a player. “My parents started playing before I was born, so it’s always been in the family. Ever since I could walk, I’ve had a club in my hand,” Ulrich said when asked about how he got into golf.
When asked about his favorite course, Ulrich replied: “Probably The Seminole Legacy at Florida State University. It’s a true test of every aspect of the game.” He also shared that his go-to club under pressure is the driver: “Driver – turn off the brain and hit it far.”
Ulrich recalled his best round: “62 (-10) from the reds, featuring a hole-in-one.” Currently, he is focusing on improving his wedge play within 80 yards: “Trying to get better at taking advantage of opportunities.”
He described his pre-round superstition: “My only superstition is that I only change my ball on a par 3.” When asked about his dream teammate from any era, he answered: “Ben Crane to lift the mood off the course.”
Reflecting on challenging experiences during college competition, Ulrich said: “The toughest course I’ve played is Purdue’s Kampen-Cosler at the 2024 Regional.”
Ulrich also spoke about what being part of SIU means to him: “Being a Saluki means you want to win no matter what. We pride ourselves on being the hardest workers every single day. Words that come to mind when thinking of a Saluki are dedicated, tough, and resilient.”
