Murphysboro High School is part of the Murphysboro Community Unit School District 186, which serves Jackson County and includes Carruthers Elementary School, General John A. Logan Attendance Centre, McElvain School, and Murphysboro Middle School as well as the high school itself. According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education, the district employed 147 teachers with an average salary of $53,770 in recent years; nearly three-quarters are women. Notably, there have been no teachers with more than ten absences in a school year (source).
The district’s student body is composed of approximately 69 percent White students, nearly 16 percent Black students, just over seven percent Hispanic students, and a small percentage of Asian students (source). In terms of finances and attendance records for the 2020 school year, Murphysboro CUSD 186 spent $19,142 per student—totaling more than $37 million—and reported a chronic truancy rate of 6.7 percent among its enrolled students. This figure is below the statewide average chronic truancy rate of 9.6 percent (source).
