The Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mount Vernon will showcase photographs by 12 Southern Illinois University Carbondale students and recent graduates starting Saturday, March 21. The exhibition, titled “University Spotlight: New Works from the Next Generation,” will be held in the Mitchell Museum’s Beal Corridor Gallery.
The event highlights emerging talent from SIU Carbondale’s School of Art and Design and the Charlotte Thompson Suhler School of Advertising and Journalism. It also includes works by students from SIU Edwardsville and Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg. Each student submitted one piece, resulting in a total of 31 artworks on display. The exhibition runs through June 14.
Admission to Cedarhurst is free except for the opening reception on March 21, which takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. as part of Cedarhurst’s “Gather at the Galleries.” General admission for the reception is $10, while members can attend at no cost.
Students representing SIU Carbondale include John Boucher (photography), Emily Brinkman (photography), Nicholas Degidio (communication design), Gabby Flores (metalsmithing), Lylee Gibbs (photojournalism), Caroline Kendall (art education), Olivia Luesing (photojournalism), Dominique Martinez-Powell (photojournalism graduate), Jewon Rias (photography), Riley Sembler (photojournalism), Dakota White (management with a minor in photography), and Olivia Zambetta (printmaking).
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is located at 2600 Richview Road in Mount Vernon. The facility operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and national holidays.
