Recognition of Guests and Visitors/Public Comment

The Board of Education welcomes the audience to make public or employee comments. The Board has set aside time in the agenda specifically for this purpose. Pursuant to Board Policy 2.230, each speaker shall be limited to a 5-minute presentation. Please be aware that, while this is the time for the public to express its opinions and/or concerns, the Board may or may not comment regarding public presentations. If a matter of public comment warrants discussion or action of the Board of Education, such discussion or action will be added to the agenda for a future meeting.

President’s Privilege

*The Board President will explain the process for the seating of the new board members and express any additional thoughts or comments.

Appoint President Pro-Tempore

*The Board will appoint one of its remaining members to conduct the meeting until a new president has been elected. The President Pro-Tem presides only through the nomination and election of the President.

Appoint Secretary Pro-Tempore

*The retiring Secretary is usually called upon to act as Secretary Pro-Tem unless a temporary Secretary is immediately chosen to serve for the time being. (The School Code authorizes the selection of a secretary pro-tem need NOT be a board member).

*Inasmuch as there is no further business to come before this board, a motion for adjournment sine die is in order.

President Pro-Tem Conducts Oath of Office for Newly-Elected Board Members

Establishment of Regular Meeting Date, Time, and Place

*The Board must establish a regular meeting date, time, and place. Presently, the UP Board has determined that the second Thursday of every month at 6 PM in the school library was appropriate to conduct school business. Attached is a copy of the corresponding dates for the upcoming school year.

Adopt Current Board of Education Policies

*In order for the new board members to officially govern their actions and those of the school, the customary action is to adopt the policies and procedures which have previously been in place that thus to those standards which have successfully provided direction to the District and to its routine functioning. Current board polices are posted on the Unity Point website. Should you have any questions, please contact Dr. JamesGross at your convenience.

Approval of Agenda

2017 IASB Mandated Board Member Training/Workshops

*Recent legislation requires re-elected or newly elected board members to complete 4- hours of mandatory training on specific legal topics within one year of taking the Oath of Office. Additionally, state law requires training on the new Performance Evaluation Reform Act, before taking action on certain kinds of teacher dismissal. Also, as a new board member, training must be completed on the Open Meetings Act within 90 days of taking the Oath. The Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) is providing the required trainings during the months of June, and July---one of which is offered in Marion on June 9-10. Dr. James-Gross will provide further information at the meeting.
